Bicycle Route de Kaag

The Kaag

This bike route takes you along the beautiful waters above Leiden. Cycle around the Kagerplassen and peacefully experience the mills, boats, and meadows. Meanwhile, you’ll visit picturesque villages. In summer, a ferry crossing to Kaageiland is a must. Want to get out on the water? Then combine this bike ride with renting a sailboat. The Kaag offers everything for a wonderful day with the whole family.

Cycling along the Kagerplassen

After renting a bike at EasyFiets, the route starts at the Zijlpoortsbrug, after which you cycle out of the city via Leiderdorp towards the Kaag. Here you overlook the Vrouw Vennepolder where you will spot many meadow birds. Take a ferry across the Kaagplassen to Kaageiland. With the bike ferry, it is possible to cycle between bike nodes 8 and 39. This bike ferry departs from the following locations: (Kaag) Hoogenboom Kaag Sloepenverhuur / Zeilbotenverhuur, Julianalaan 72 in Kaag. (Oud Ade) Camping ‘t Haasje, Boekhorsterweg 22 in Oud Ade. On a sunny day, this is definitely worth it.

After visiting Kaageiland, you can continue the journey through typical Dutch polder landscapes where you can admire beautiful meadows and waterways. After De Kaag, you reach Lisse where you can visit the flower fields and the Keukenhof. Here you can plan a stop to enjoy the tulip landscape, a bite to eat, and a drink. Also, check out the extensive Tulip Route through the bulb region. In a southern direction, you cycle to Sassenheim where you will pass the Vrouw Vennepolder on the way. This is a beautiful piece of nature in the polder landscape. Via Warmond, you then return, along the Kagerplassen, to Leiden.
